FUN KITE ACADEMYGREG- Kitesurfing School, Les Salines, Guadeloupe "I’ve struggled writing this article about Fun Kite Academy. I’d have liked to talk about their windsurfing or kitesurfing lessons or about the exceptional site on which they teach…. The thing is, when arriving at the Salines, there is something that catches one’s attention even more than these : the welcome and human contact one gets there.
Greg’s surroundings are a bit like a huge family: one arrives and immediately feels at home! I had been quite nostalgic to see the vibe and the brotherhood we used to have at the sport’s beginnings disappear over the past years: I found it back there.
Dotted with a contagious energy, Greg is one of a kind: talkative, always smiling, upfront, funny, we could not help but become friends with him and his team. He is open to new ideas, loves making plans, he is always full on but also always finds time to share a beer with his mates. Genuine character –with an ability to be as blunt as we are !-, he is generous, fun and most of all…. He’s COOL. His team, dynamic, professional, passionate, has a communicative energy and the lagoon is an ideal playground to learn water sports.
Yann, base manager for over three years now, fits in Fun Kite Academy perfectly: always smiling and genuinely nice, professional without being serious, he’s the ladies and the youngsters big favourite. As a teen, he used to spend most of his time at his local sailing club, surfing and windsurfing along Guadeloupe’s shores: this is his natural environment.
Yann is one happy chap: he wouldn’t trade his place for anything in the world. Greg and Yann have a common philosophy regarding instruction: safety first, then theory is handy, practice, much better…. But the best training is the one during which people are having a good time.
They care to teach away from any uptight academism: this must remain “fun”. Matter of fact, they wonderfully manage to mix professionalism with laid back-ness.
An Academy having an anti academic academism?
Of course I love it! This is a place where people manage to be serious without ever taking themselves seriously. And it rocks! Check out Fun Kite Academy website to find out more about the school or to contact "the Saline’s Dream Team" Emilie Marx" Info Riding at the Salines : watch out for the wind shadow along the cliff (be careful on NE, the wind swings off shore) ; rigg at the far south end of the beach (near the point, that’s where the wind will be the cleanest), away from swimmers and other beach users ; do ask to a fellow kiter to launch you (there’s almost always someone to give you a hand) and cruise way upwind from the shore (or outside the baie) ; watch out for possible strong currents past the point and the reef. And yes, the ways are way ridable, but be super cautious at low tide : it can be super tight (and possibly painful). Look at a few series before deciding to go above the reef : often it’s okay…. But sometimes, it’s not…. Any doubt ? Well, ask before going ! ;) |
